Why Basements Destroy Paintings in Minnesota Winters
Every Minnesotan knows that our winters can cause weird things to happen in our houses. Those of us who own artwork are all too aware of the effects winter can have on our pieces. Here are some reasons why you should not store your artwork in the basement during the winter.
Lack of Insulation
Many of our basements are built and left unfinished. The lack of sufficient insulation, often allows the cold to enter our basements through the foundation walls and floors. The cold not only causes temperature changes, but also creates condensation where you least expect it.
If you do have a finished basement, and have insulation, the cold is less likely to be a dramatic difference but the change in overall outside temperature will react to the warmer internal temperature creating moisture pockets. Even when we have sufficient insulation, the fluctuating temperatures inside and out due to an unregulated climate, negatively impact the materials used in paintings.
The cold foundation creates condensation on concrete and metal beams. This makes these surfaces perfect places for mold growth, which can spread rapidly on paintings.
Low Outside Humidity
Minnesota is known to have extremely dry winters. Even when the temperature feels warm enough, the air itself is low in humidity. The lack of moisture will cause materials to contract, and then expand as spring grows closer. This will cause cracking and crazing in thicker paints and warping in wooden stretchers or paper based artworks.
Pests
Pests of all sorts love our low-traffic basements. They also love cooler, darker spaces where they can continue to live without freezing outside. Materials like wood and canvas provide a sought after snack or home depending on the pest.
So What?
The nature of the typical basement during Minnesota winters do not provide a good location for art storage. Your artwork is likely to warp, mold, or crack during these months and the changing seasons if kept in these conditions for long. This often means a loss in longevity and value for your artwork.
If you need a temperature and climate controlled space during our winter months, A2/Artserve is here for you. We operate a facility through snow and shine, with 35,000 sq ft of climate regulated space. Our art handlers are skilled at moving and caring for your artwork to ensure no losses, even when the weather is less than ideal.
